Towards the Beatification of Sister Irene Stefani – NYAATHA (The Merciful One)

By Charles Muchiri During the pre-independence era in Kenya, most locals (a huge number of them illiterate) could hardly pronounce European names correctly. So, they would coin the names, mostly of the many Italian missionaries, at the convenience of their tongues. Say for example; The Agikuyu of Central Kenya could gladly call Father Cammisasius - 'Batha Kamithathi' ; Sister Agnes would be called 'Thithita Anyethi' , and so on and so forth. But enter Sister Irene Stefani, and the locals around Gikondi Catholic Parish at the Archdiocese of Nyeri, just had to search for a brand new name for the young woman, whom according to them was so full of mercy. They called her NYATHA – Loosely translating to the Merciful one! And that name stuck, all the way to her death, at a tender age of 39. To them, Nyaatha became one of their own. By Charles Muchiri Left: Emmah Wamuyu My 65 years old mother, Emmah Wamuyu Muchoki has an official favourite pew where she always sits during Holy Mass at our local church – St John Mihuti Catholic Church of Gikondi Parish in the Archdiocese of Nyeri. It’s amazing that she can’t sit anywhere else; it has to be on that pew, somewhere in the middle of that church, at the extreme left end. And even if she came in late, everyone around knows that this is her position! If anything, most guys at our local church have their own favourite positions where they almost can’t miss seating! Take for example, my mother’s best friend – Madam Felishina Wanja, they always sit right next to each other! So, if they aren’t seating at their favourite pew, then they must be absent from the church that day! This day that marked the end of Year B of the Church and the onset of year C was marked with pomp and colour at the Benedictine Monastery - Bible on the Ground, Nanyuki. “During this year of Faith, we are called upon to deepen our relationship with God; to grow much deeper in our faith,” noted Fr Cyril in his Homily. “It is important that we avoid falling out of our faith in search of other misleading doctrines.
