Aging Gracefully: Celebrating our Kenyan octogenarian Bishops

Like old gold: They sparkle with Heavenly Grace: And as they did in their mid ages: They still raise Christ up: Calling us to behold: He who in their glorious sunset: He who still lovingly upholds them!

Call them Bishop Emeritus or our octogenarian shepherds. And they are truly worth celebrating; worth all our accolades.

Here in Kenya, we can’t talk about octogenarian bishops without making a mention of 5 great men of God who have been around the sun well over 80 times!

And starting with the oldest, these bishops are as follows:

Bishop Colin Cameron Davies M.H.M, Bishop Emeritus of Ngong 
Bishop Emeritus Colin Cameron Davies was born on 10 June 1924; He is now 88 years old.

He was ordained as a Priest of the Order of St. Joseph's Missionary Society of Mill Hill on 13 July 1952 at the age of 28 years and 1 month.

  • He was appointed the Bishop of Ngong, Kenya on 9 December 1976 and retired on 23 November 2002 at the age of 78 years and 5 months.
 Bishop Silas Silvius Njiru; Bishop Emeritus of Meru 
 
 Bishop Emeritus Silas Silvius Njiru was born on 10 October 1928; he is now 83 years and 8 months old.

He was ordained as a Priest of Meru, Kenya on 17th December 1955 at the age of 27 years and 2 months.


  • He was the Titular Bishop of Maturba between 2 October 1975 and 9 December 1976.
  • He was appointed the Bishop of Meru, Kenya on 9 December 1976 and retired on 18 March 2004 at the age of 75 years and 4 months.
Archbishop John Njenga; Archbishop Emeritus of Mombasa

Archbishop Emeritus John Njenga
Archbishop Emeritus John Njenga was born on 25 December 1928; He is now 83 and 6 months old.

He was ordained as a Priest on 17 February 1957 at the age of 28 years and 1 month.

He served as:
  • Bishop of Eldoret, Kenya between 19 October 1970 and 25 October 1988.
  • Bishop of Mombasa, Kenya between 25 October 1988 and 21 May 1990.
  • And was elevated to the Archbishop of Mombasa, Kenya between 21 May 1990 up to his retirement on 1 April 2005. He retired at the age of 76 years and 3 months.
Bishop Ambrogio Ravasi, I.M.C.' Bishop Emeritus of Marsabit
Bishop Emeritus Ambrogio Ravasi was born on 7 February 1929; He is now 83 and 4 months old.

He was ordained as a Priest of the order of the Consolata Missionaries on 9 February 1957 at the age of 28 years.

  • He was appointed as Bishop of Marsabit, Kenya on 19 June 1981 and retired on 25 November 2006 at the age of 77 years and 8 months.
Archbishop Raphael  S. Ndingi Mwana'a Nzeki; Archbishop Emeritus of Nairobi

Archbishop Emeritus Raphael S. Ndingi Mwana’a Nzeki was born on 25 December 1931; He is now 80 and 6 months old.

Having been ordained as a Priest on 31 January 1961 (aged 29 years and 1 month) He later served as Bishop in three different dioceses.

He served as:

  • The Bishop of Machakos, Kenya Between 29 May 1969 and 30 August 1971.
  • The Bishop of Nakuru, Kenya Between 30 August 1971 and 14 June 1996
  • Coadjutor Archbishop of Nairobi, Kenya Between 14 June 1996 and 21 April 1997
  • Archbishop of Nairobi, Kenya Between 21 April 1997 up to his retirement on 6 October 2007.

And though old age lingers with loving fondness over these bishops’ pages; memories of their golden rays continue to light up our lives.
