Kenya thirsty for Maurice cardinal Otunga Beatification

By Charles Muchiri

So, Saturday 15 September is a date that has been officially ear-marked by many Kenyan Roman Catholic Christians here at the Capital City, Nairobi as the day for a walk towards the beatification of Maurice Cardinal Otunga.

A superb cause, by all means: And as the sports' sneakers touch the tarmac on this day, many Kenyans must be praying that the steps towards this great Kenyan canonization may be a little faster than those of the Country’s own athlete - David Rudisha!

Indeed, Kenya is hungry for more servants of God; more blessed, more saints; more closer-home examples of persons who have lived amongst them.

And although over the years, there has been a long list of African saints, who lived a virtuously right here in this continent, there is a general sense here in Kenya, that with the beatification and in the future days, canonization of Maurice Cardinal Otunga, the Church celebrant should just as well start expanding its rooms for more Kenyans!

Looking West of Kenya; what do you get? A whole set of the popular Ugandan Martyrs! Looking North, St Josephine Bhakita comes to mind! And so on and so forth!

And that’s why the beatification of the Servant of God, Maurice Cardinal Otunga will be a very welcome experience for the faith of this East African Nation.

Hugely popular amongst many Kenyans, the Servant of God Maurice Cardinal Otunga came across many who knew him as an incredibly humble man of God.

He was born in Chebukwa, at the diocese of Kakamega in Kenya on January 1923. He died on September 6, 2003 having served as Cardinal and Archbishop emeritus of Nairobi as well as the Military Ordinary emeritus for Kenya.

Another Servant of God, Sister Irene Stefani (Nyaatha), an Italian born nun who worked in Kenya for most of her 39 years;  is also set for Beatification in the nearest future.
