The gloomy feeling of being glued on a church pew during communion

By Charles Muchiri

Trust me on this, there is nothing that is as sad as watching almost everyone with whom you are seated on the same church pew, wake up almost simultaneously, to go and receive the Holy Communion – and you are left right there! And you know very well that you are not going to stand on your feet to go and meet dear sweet Jesus in the Holy Eucharist!

I have been in such a situation – and trust me, you feel like you are the only spectator in a whole empty stadium! While everyone else is inside the pitch, playing the game, passionately!

That’s how it feels. And it’s not a good feeling at all. Of course, there isn’t any need to belabor the point here; of just how well the liturgy of the word and the liturgy of the Eucharist, marry so well to those who unreservedly partake of both, in Holy Mass.

But the Liturgy of the Eucharist is certainly the acme of the Holy Mass. That is why we call it Eucharistic celebration!

How then, can you go attending an Eucharistic celebration and you don’t get to really celebrate it; you don’t really rub against Christ’s Graces, by partaking in the Holy Communion?

That’s the exact feeling that you get: You feel half-way.

Of course where I go for Mass, there is a whole half of the congregation that doesn’t really budge off their seats during Holy Communion.

And you might just as well try to throw the ‘spiritual communion’ into the picture; and it will not change a thing about my feelings on this issue.

There is no avoiding this horrible, empty feeling at all.

So, it is true what they say; that it is only when you go way down the valley, that you can appreciate the splendor of the mountain peak!
